A Focus For The Term

I wanted to quickly share with you what I’m focusing on in my teaching this term; I’ve brought back the old classic heads shoulders knees and toes! Or more specifically the Te Reo version of this, Māhunga pakihiwi. This is great because a lot of the kids and teachers already know it a bit, so its an easy and fun start for us all.

As a little back-to-school treat, I’m making this module available FREE for all you newsletter subscribers during this term only: Here is a link to the brand new full module if you’d like to include it in your lessons

I’m using this waiata as the vehicle to cover the following Te Reo Achievement objectives in the curriculum:

  • 1.7 Use and respond to simple classroom language. I.e asking and answering what is this/ where is the…
  • 1.5 Communicate about location.
  • 2.5 Communicate about physical characteristics, personality, and feelings
For the younger kids, it’s enough for them to know the names, but for years 3 upwards, I’m really keen to get them conversing simply in Te Reo: Where is your head? Here is my head… etc

I find this sentence structure one of the most useful as it can be used in a wide range of contexts:

I.e

Where is the pen? / Kei hea te pene?

Here it is / Kei konei

Here is your work / Kei konei tō mahi

Where is the book? / Kei hea te pukapuka?

I’m keen to hear your experience! Have a play with this new module in your class and let me know your successes and difficulties! Here’s the link in case you missed it: Mahunga Pakihiwi: Body Parts Module
Get in quick while the link is active for you this term only.

Talk soon,

Justin
